Dredge sluice question

Postby Geo-George » Sat Jul 30, 2011 7:47 am

When using a dredge, what keeps the larger material from knocking values out of place and forcing them down and out of the sluice? :? Seems to me that a 2 or 3 inch "boulder" would displace Gold from remaining in the sluice.
I have done so much, with so little, for so long, that I am now qualified to do anything with nothing.
Now, I just have to find the time to put the dang thing together.

Hey bud. With the riffle design it acts like the bottom of the rivers. They create eddies or low pressure areas for the gold to fall out into. With the newer dredges they have triple sluices to allow for lower pressure areas to catch finer gold. Also the inlet designs make a big difference also. the old crash boxes did ok , but the newer flare jet design allows for the gold to settle out easier. allowing for better retension of gold. That help????? To bad Cali. has gone belly up on dredging!!!!!! You looking here in Nev. somewhere???

I have about 4 ft. of "slick plate" followed by 4 ft. of "rough top" conveyor belting, followed by 8 ft. of ribbed carpet with an overlay of riffles. I did build a grizzly of sorts to screen out the larger material but it's just another piece to move around. I would like to drop it out of my system, that's why I asked the question.

Calif. "law" be damned, I can dredge on my claim with no "piss fir" interferance. I haven't seen DFG within 7 miles of my claim in the past 4 yrs. ( I'm in a very remote area. ) Plus, a local paper states that Calif. doesn't have the funds to enforce the ban anyway. 8-)

Actually, we're running a 3". We have other values showing up besides Gold.
Some gems stones have showed up. Our theory is that we can retain some of these along with Gold.
One of the partners is an avid gem stone collector and we have leasoned the angle on the last 4 ft. to retain material at that end. He tends the sluice and picks through the material as we run it.
Another thought is that we don't have to stop and clean up as often.
We use a bar magnet to clean out the black sands at the top end since we are having a lot of "load up" from the sands. We keep the sands to process later.
It's all an experiment to see just what is retained.
It's all in fun John, all in fun. ;)

BTW John, we are finding "Calif. Jade", milky white/green, not of Oriant/asian quality but makes some nice jewelery, and some small diamonds.
If you have any suggestions, I'd appreciate your input. :)
