rusty gas tank

Postby bill-costa rica » Mon Jun 13, 2011 1:02 pm

took the gas cap off my honda motor, the tank was dry and full of rust. what can i use to coat the tank so it doesn´t plug the filter with rust ? or the carb for that matter. i am sure there must be some product you can buy to fix the tank, i just don´t know what it is.

Bill, motorcycle shops have a product just for that purpose. you take the fuel tank off and put some nuts and bolts in it and shake it up real good to remove all the rust. dump it out and flush the tank with some alky, let it dry then pour this product into it and let it dry. remember to keep the threaded areas clean. the name of this product is: Kreem and its about $46. a kit to buy. i just asked the dealer i know about it and if he had any! he did. not seeing the amount of product in this kit, im assuming that itll do about 2 or 3 small tanks like the Honda

Take a look here! May be cheaper to replace the tank. Bill

Years back I was working on my dads old Honda motorcycle that had a nice and rusty gas tank. We treated the rusty tank with Muriatic acid and then rinsed it with water, let it dry and added something similar to that Kreeme stuff. 10 years later and the sealer is holding strong. Something like this could work, but I'm sure you can do it for less.http://www.kbs-coatings.com/cycle-tank-sealer-kit.html

I have dealt with dozens of rusty tanks and you should not over think this. I would only use the Kreem if a replacement tank was
unavailable, very expensive or if the original tank was necessary to maintain some restoration type project.

First remove the tank and rinse out as much loose rust as possible. Remove the valves and screens if any and plug the holes.
Now pour in a couple cups of muriatic acid. It may fume, use protective gear.
If it doesn't start reacting, slowly heat the tank. Set it in strong sun on a black surface or play a torch on the bottom.
It will certainly fume at this point, don't breathe it. Agitate the tank gently and let it work for about 15 minutes.
Rinse the tank several times with water then once with acetone or rubbing alcohol to remove all the water.
Look inside and it will be shiny clean and have the same surface it left the factory with, bare steel. Bolt it on and start dredging.

Kreem type products are fine and do a good job but for a dredge motor they are complete overkill, time consuming and expensive.
It you didn't live on the opposite side of the planet I would give you one of the tanks I have sitting around here 8-)

Larry where did that quote come from???? i know that any gas tank that has set dry for many years outside in the sun will definatly EXPLODE if you put a tourch to it! just cause its dry and rusty dont mean it still wont explode! ive welded many fuel tanks and the best way to do it is either fill it with foam like the fire dept does to putout fires or fill it with water and leave the hole up on top. and even then you need tobe very carefull!
