Bill - I guess you're talkin' tah me, but I don't know about what.

If it's about the use of the restrictor bar across the nozzle then I don't understand -

The pump's little and can move only so much material. Getting down to heavier material at the bottom of a hole means it's going to be working overtime to get the stuff at the bottom up to the crash box and will have a better chance of loading up with just the bulk of heavy material (all that gold of course) with large rocks and heavy gravel. It only makes sense to eliminate some of the larger rocks, don't you think? :o

And Yes, John - A mo better pump would indeed be nice. And an excavator, and a trommel, and heck, while I'm spending all this money I don't have, why not a nice Case 580 with Extend-a-Hoe (Bill - That's not a limber hooker).

Sam
guess I was a little grumpy last night. what I was trying to say is you are trying to build something out of the wrong parts, when you get a good part you want to change it for the worst. adding a bar across your nozzle will slow you down so much there will be almost no gravel making it to your sluice. you are already behind the 8 ball with such a small dredge. moving gravel is the name of the game. Russ and john, both have given you a lot of info, both guys know there stuff. hoser has forgotten more than most of us will ever know. if you want to save yourself some money and aggravation try and listen to what they are saying. also don’t pay any attention to me when I am in a pissy mood.

If you are worried about that weld, gas it.
It'll only take a few minutes to clean it up.
I do some of my work with oxy/ace.
Most often I use my wire feed.

And no, do not restrict your intake.
You loose out in volume of material.
Key word here is "restriction", it's a no, no.

Something Mark Keene, of Keene Engineering, told me.
Figure one inch of nozzle size to one foot of overburden.
So a 2" nozzle would be maxed out with 2' of overbudern.
It's a time factor, less time bent over.
It takes a lot longer to work 3' of overburden to get to bedrock
with a 2" nozzzle. :(
AND, you need to maintain at least 30 psi to operate efficiantly.
I have done so much, with so little, for so long, that I am now qualified to do anything with nothing.
Now, I just have to find the time to put the dang thing together.
