CuracaoAGUADILLA, Puerto Rico (CBP) — Several courier packages were seized this week by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the Rafael Hernandez International Airport containing 11 cast-gold bars arriving from Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles.

In mid-December 2012, CBP Officers at the Aguadilla inspection facility came upon six unusually heavy shipments arriving from Curacao which rendered a more intrusive inspection. The inspection revealed several gold cast bars.

“This seizure proves once more that CBP officers at our ports of entry are very vigilant and will continue working with our partners to identify contraband arriving from abroad,” stated Marcelino Borges, director of CBP field operations for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. “We will not tolerate the introduction of contraband into our jurisdiction whether it is in the form of narcotics or any other type.”

The total weight for the Gold-bars is approximately 76.5 pounds (34.70 kilos) and an estimated value of $1.7M.

The eleven gold-bars were transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) for further investigation.

About CBP

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation’s borders at and between official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.

If and thats a big IF those bafoons over in africa on whatever show had managed to find more gold than they managed, how would one move that to USD, and than into the country?
Through a legit bank in africa, but your still stuck bringing it into the country

I think that is the $2 million shipment Leonard has been expecting from his close relative in Nigeria who died recently.

I was not aware that gold or gold bars were contraband...Gold is illegal? Or is it "illegal" because it hasn't been taxed yet & the homeland "security" just wanted it???

I can't help thinking this...Open boarders with not enough assets to protect us from untold numbers of terrorists & degenerates coming across but by gosh, we won't let any dangerous gold bars get in this country illegally...

i beleive gold/gems in their natural form are allowed, but gold in bars and cut -polished stones wouldnt get by the inspectors without being taxed/claimed/??? i think anything over $10,000.has tobe reported.

I googled the subject and there are miniscule amounts allowed but since depression almost all taxed, when even allowed at all, pretty high, with import tax and then income/capital gains taxes also. bummer-John :o

Was just wondering if laws had changed as I was acquainted with a fella' who had dredged in Brazil (early 80's) who claimed to have had to mail most of his gold home 'cause their government demanded all gold 2 be sold to them. But ya', that was raw gold.
