Sheesh... . . . Gets a bit hot in here from time to time, eh?
Saw an article in the local paper about how dredgers were polluting the streams and waterways with the release of heavy metals like lead and mercury. I was confused, since the miners I know, remove that stuff, not throw it back in the river?
Heck, why did I build my retort? And no, I do NOT throw my mercury back where I got it.
Then I saw the following article today:
http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/news/press_releases/2012/suction-dredge-mining-04-03-2012.htmlNow, I' do consider myself to be environmentally aware. Not a tree hugging, friend of flipper fanatic, but definitely conscientious when I'm prospecting, shooting, or just enjoying the Sierras. I can't say that I've been guilty of,
"...releasing toxic mercury leftover from the Gold Rush, and generating silt that chokes spawning beds..."I guess if I had a question regarding this whole misguided mess, it would have to be, Are there really miners who are so insensitive and inconsiderate of the environment and others on this planet that they would knowingly pollute and destroy the very environment they so love to go to for recreation and to enjoy, often with friends and family?
My guess is, no. Although I do witness enough stupidity on the highways and byways that I would have to factor in an idiot or two here and there. The cigarette butt flicked out the truck window. Gotta love the ones that hit the road and make sparks and roll along glowing towards the grassy embankment. I do know there are a few less than genius individuals who wonder how those cigarette butts end up on the beaches. Hell, any minor knows gutters lead to streams, and streams lead to rivers, and rivers empty into the ocean, but the guy flicking the butt who doesn't have a clue, or care where the butt ends up, probably WOULD throw the mercury and lead he captured in his rig back into the river. But then, he was an idiot in the first place.
Now, I'm not saying I've never flicked a cigarette butt out a window or onto the ground, and I have witnessed fish begin to get sluggish and seemingly choke on the density of particulates in the water I churned up from the bottom, but I learned both were bad things, and I stopped. You know, it's kinda like finding out you have a two drink limit. Sometimes it takes longer for some; like the day you wake up and your car isn't in the driveway and you wonder how you got home... . . .
I wanna go dredging. Can't everybody just kiss and make up?! The rain is washing gold as we jaw. Everybody PLEASE learn to play nice!
