Credulous? I guess, in you mind, that would be anyone who dosen't agree with your view of things? I suppose you think Dave sent those guys down to the Salmon to piss off the tribe?
rivraton,
Since I posed the question as to who did what - I don't think DM sent those people down there. The environmentalist, and Indian tribes having money were just itching for a fight, and saw this as a perfect opportunity to mess with the mining law of 1872. As I understand it, the Karuks were a pretty poor, and average Indian of that tribe didn't want anything to do with the lawsuit. I also understand it was a member of the Karuk tribal council that was involved in initiating the suit, once he knew he had financial backing.
I now live Colorado, and aren't current with things going on in my native state. I would love to visit, especially to prospect, but don't think I want to, as the current governor was governor when I finally gave up California as my permanent residence. He was more interested in Linda Ronstadt than cleaning up the mess his dad left the state.
When he was alive, William Kritikos was a knowledgeable engineer who got into mining in a big way. His son Billy and I spent weekends at a cinnabar mine, where I learned to understand what gold mining was. Were he alive today, he would give those who are giving the small time miners grief, more than a piece of his mind. He could get the $ and support to help the cause of PLP and others. I'm glad he's not though, because he wouldn't believe the condition of the economy, how little respect small time miners get, and how certain interest groups are behind their demise. Gold helped shape the state, but it also hurt the state, and that hurt today is propelling the interest to shut the miners down. As far as the environmentalist, Indians, and any others they can gather, are concerned, that's fine with them.
California is in such a economic bind today, it isn't concerned with the plight of the miners, and the governor will continue to sign legislation screwing them into the ground. Unfortunately money talks, and PLP and others can't compete. Those behind the demise of the miners, have DEEP pockets. Miners have to protest just like non English speaking folks did when the state tried to make pass the English only bill/law. Tons of illegals came out of the walls, and cracks, to protest that one. Look at what Harvey Milk did for the gay movement. He was a visionary. He imagined a righteous world inside his head and then he set about to create it for real.
Why can't the miners of California do that? If they start the groundswell, those in other states, will see, and not be afraid to jump on the band wagon.
This is just my 2 cents on the subject, and thanks for allowing me to rant. I'm sure some on this forum will want to poke holes in my comments, and that's fine. Just as long as it doesn't result in a knock down, drag out, fight. I'm too old for that.
