placer Gold

Postby briwslave1 » Sun Mar 18, 2012 3:12 pm

Does placer gold ever appear as flakes? I understand that it is pliable but how malleable could it be? I've found some very fine flakes among soft stones mixed with mica. I know what mica looks like but mixed in with it is something that has a golden sheen rather than a whitish sheen. The flakes are extremely small, but more than can be counted. The soft stones are heavier than the surrounding creek stones. Where can I go to find out if I have stumbled onto something real? You guys have been very helpful and I want you all to know that I appreciate it.
Thanks in advance, again. I.ve read many of the posts here and everyone seems to good natured and courteous.

If you have ever had gold in your pan, you know that with slight swirling, gold tends to stay put while the lighter stuff moves about...
placer gold will become very easliy identifiable as you gain experience! That is the best test I have for you.
Yes placer gold comes in the form of flakes - but even with a picture, it would be hard to tell you that you definately have gold!
Good luck :)

Smash a small lead weight, put it in with the material. If the 'gold' moves when the lead sits still, it ain't gold!

You simply need a knife and a magnet--magnet don't stick-good-press hard with a knife--ifn' it cracks, crumbles or goes crunch--NOT GOLD--bummer. Gold still shines in the shade pretty good to. tons a au 2 u 2 -John

I compare Golds glow to the glow of the Moon.
If it's bright like the Sun, it ain't, if it has a glow like the Moon, even in the shade, it is.
Pyrite has a Sun glow, but no Moon glow.
I have done so much, with so little, for so long, that I am now qualified to do anything with nothing.
Now, I just have to find the time to put the dang thing together.

at a gold show a guy came in with some stuff that i first thought was
"mica"
we ran it on "bullet bobs black sand concentrator aka miller table and it acted like mica then we isolated a few chunks and sure as bees make honey it didnt shatter, just cut and acted like gold. so gatherin up all my years of experience i told him ..... get it assayed :)

or you could just ask the water what it is
