A lot of the craft I'm seeing, wouldn't pass a float by USCG inspection by a blind inspector! I know it's wilderness, but some of those wouldn't even qualify to be called a boat. Plus, I don't think some of the divers could swim to shore, let alone pass a PADI cert test.

If they are trying to make it look bad they are succeeding. :(

Just my .02 worth.

They arent making the industry look bad, only themselves. If you watch for the occasional wide angle shot, you will see normal looking dredges scattered in the background. As I have said before, following those dredges around would not be very interesting.
Look at Operation Repo...between the painted hog and the crybaby steroid junkie there is never a dull moment. Do they make the repo industry look bad? nope, only themselves.

I agree with Bonaro,

I think BSG and GRA are intended by Discover/TLC Inc., design to put miners in a bad light.
One thing I will say is we've had multiple inquiries on our Nebraska site from new people interested in getting out. In the last week I've had four new people register on nebraskagoldprospector.org. One guy where I work is interested in getting out with his son, his son got the family hooked on GRA.

I have avoided Bering sea gold. And I DVR GRA only to speed through to see the daily take. Too much friggin' drama. I've worked for a few a-holes in my day and worked with a few idiots in my day and frankly, i don't need the reminders of those memories. The only way they can sell the show is on the drama. Don't think as many people would watch if they would film only the hours of work and not film the break downs and drug addled fights..

I was in Nome last summer and saw the flotilla of small boat/dredges going out each day. Amazing sight. Many had just a couple of inches of freeboard with waves splashing over the bow. Lots of interesting miners in these boat/dredges, many living right along the shoreline in tents...and yet they do find gold.

If you checked the Keene website recently you might have seen the "Auric Explorer" under 'Mark's blog'. This is the Keene offshore dredge they are building, over forty feet LOA and 3000 GPM out of the dual pumps into a 20' x 48" sluice. There will be many more this summer. The Keene vessel would be interesting to add to the ones seen on BSG but it will be too professional and not a floating piece of junk that Discovery TV prefers over gold mining professionalism. I concur that they prefer idiots over ingenuity.

The local newspaper is the Nome Nugget and they had a recent article on the local the tremendous number of phone calls coming into the Alaska DNR and other local tourist connections regarding interest by people in coming to Nome and prospecting for gold. The article was titled: "The Bering Sea Gold Rush Is On Its Way". Only 108 years since the previous Nome gold rush.

I am wondering what Nome will be like this coming summer what with all of the interest in mining the Bering Sea???

Last week at the Washington Prospectors (WPMA) Gold Show there were an unusually large group of people there, newbies to mining, expressing interest in how to mine the ocean beaches and what type of equipment they'll require. I've also heard that several businesses involved with Alaska tourism and travel are expecting a record year. What is hot and sellable is anything to do with Alaska, gold and mining.

Heard from a friend and local that Nome is preparing for a significant influx of people looking to go mining. There was no housing available last summer so what will it be like this year? Perhaps they'll be bunking with Steve in his bus.

If only I was a younger man.
